Sook-Yin Lee in Shortbus

Sook-Yin Lee

Chinese-Canadian actress Sook-Yin Lee appears in the independent film, Shortbus. Now I'm sure we've all seen asian women in movies before, so what makes this different? Well, the actors in this film perform real sex.

Sook-Yin Lee

No doubt most of us AS'ers have seen hundreds if not thousands of asian women in pornos, but seeing a mainstream actress like Sook-Yin Lee performing real sex on film is a rarity. For those not quite familiar with her, a quick check of her IMDB profile reveals a decently well rounded filmography, with roles in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, 3 Needles, the pilot episode of Sliders, and a stint as a VJ on the canadian music site Muchmusic.com. Here are some vidcaps of her in Shortbus, as well as a lil bonus at the bottom. =)

COMMENTS

That's interesting. I mean, there was some hoopla about Tiffany Limos performing "real sex" in "Ken Park" (it was as real as a Showtime After Hours movie), then Chloe Sevigny *actually* performing oral sex on Vincent Gallo in "Brown Bunny," but this takes it to the next level.

I have to wonder, though, WHY it seems like a big deal. After all, "Playboy" is mainstream now, and pr0n is now as close as your computer. But still, it's not like it's Julia Roberts doing it; it's a little-known actress who, frankly, looks to me like Lucy Liu after a terrible accident (not that her body doesn't rock).

Maybe it's that although everyone has sex, only a relative few people in the movie biz will actually have it for real on camera, and they're usually pr0n performers. Because as mainstream as it's becoming, there's still a stigma attached.

My point? I don't know. It's past my bedtime.

I have to agree that she isn't the most attractive girl I've seen, but she's an actress, not a model. Indeed, being relatively plain seems to be an advantage when you're an actor - it allows you to play more roles, and seems to make people take you more seriously.

IMHO, if you put yourself out there as a model, then you are basically issuing an open invitation for everyone to judge you on your looks. But I don't think it's appropriate to judge a real actor that way.

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 19, 06 | 1:56 am

she looks ok but a little too manly...so she is mainstream but had sex on film...was it a porno or a regular film and they actually bump ugly?...i saw nads:)

Posted by: LawBoy on Dec 19, 06 | 4:04 am

what is the different between this movie and porn?....besides the actress in porns look better :)

Posted by: LawBoy on Dec 19, 06 | 4:05 am

this one can actually ACT. Some people find that to be a talent...

Posted by: ogpro on Dec 19, 06 | 4:17 am

ogpro..i guess that can somewhat be erotic...i remember the movie The Lover with Jane March...i think they also had sex on screen...does this happen often?

Posted by: LawBoy on Dec 19, 06 | 5:40 am

Good postings ogpro!
(I fixed the minor lay-out issues for you ;-)

Posted by: Robin Hood on Dec 19, 06 | 6:18 am

I agree - it's good to finally have you 'in the saddle' ogpro!

And Robin's agreeing with me so much these days, the next thing you know he'll be using a Mac. ;-)

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 19, 06 | 6:45 am

Oh yeah LawBoy - Asian or not, Jane March is HOT! :-)

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 19, 06 | 6:46 am

doc..she almost look asian...feel guilty for about 1 minute watching The Lover since it is about an underage girl...but boy was she developed for an underage girl...:)

Posted by: LawBoy on Dec 19, 06 | 7:00 am

I seem to remember she was a really exotic mixture of various things, although I'm not sure if there's any Asian in there - maybe native American, who often do look quite Asian.

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 19, 06 | 7:13 am

i second (third!) lawboy and dr. lee. jane march ROCKS! what ever happened to her, anyway?

Posted by: newworks on Dec 19, 06 | 9:29 am

In the first photo she kinda has Lucy Liu eyes.

Posted by: Robin Hood on Dec 19, 06 | 10:02 am

Jane March, has vietnamese, chinese, english and spanish backgrouns. No wonder she gets to be so exotic. Seems she's doing movies again recently.

I guess the real sex will feel a lot more natural. Maybe the kind like we actually do (I always get bit depressed with those porn performances, lol).

Refreshing to see, hopefully!

Posted by: daznlover on Dec 19, 06 | 11:24 am

AH! Good ol' Sook-Yin! Fellow Canadian doing....mainstream harcore(? -- could that be a new film sub-genre?). She's not the country's hottest Asian but she is agruably one of the most talented and diverse (she's also a musician).

For all of us who grew up (or didn't grow up as the case may be) watching her on MuchMusic, this real sex movie is a real treat! :)

(more on Canadian Asians....I lived down the hall from Sandra Oh's sister (even met Sandra). She's a lawyer or doctor (one of the two) -- and a real biatch! Wow! The attitude! It's not the husband (who is a great guy) who wears the pants in that family! The Oh's are not my favorite.)

Now back on topic! :)

Posted by: Krazy4Kobe on Dec 19, 06 | 12:00 pm

Lawboy, I think there was some sort of controversy over that Jane March film where they thought it was real sex, the difference I think was that they denied the real sex while here it is openly discussed and admitted hehe.

Robin and Dr. Lee, thanks! Back in the saddle because I'm back in town after a long absence. Good to be back. =) HOnestly, it is kind of scary to post, I feel like you really have to have AAA content otherwise you'll get flamed, hehe. Maybe I'm just paranoid...I should get used to that here on AS...

Happy Holidays!

Posted by: ogpro on Dec 19, 06 | 12:47 pm

I saw the uncut movie clip of Sook Yin-Lee from celebrity moviearchive. Its clearly she had penetrative sex and without rubber. What about risk and dignity? Should an actor put themself so low?

Posted by: fellashow on Dec 19, 06 | 4:45 pm

Sounds like a porno for the big screen to me. Quite disgusting in its own little way.

Posted by: jdrevenge on Dec 19, 06 | 5:11 pm

[COMMENT DELETED]

That's one strike arf. We do not accept rude or inappropriate comments (see the disclaimer at the bottom of the page). Two more such comments, and your membership will be suspended.

Posted by: arf on Dec 19, 06 | 5:50 pm

Thanks arf. I think we were all wondering about that.
Doc, what do you think, do these types of comments classify as: non-relevant, rude, vulgar or inappropriate?

Posted by: Robin Hood on Dec 19, 06 | 6:53 pm

Im not Doc, but I would say a cross between rude and inappropriate. (though the last three terms on your list are quite similar).

Posted by: jdrevenge on Dec 19, 06 | 7:29 pm

Actually, non-relevant and inappropriate are so close that it's probably superfluous to list both. And I agree with jdrevenge - I think such comments are both rude and inappropriate. I would have deleted it if you guys didn't get to it first!

BTW, why do people say 'non-relevant' these days? Why not good old-fashioned irrelevant? When I was learning English, non-relevant would have been considered gramatically incorrect, but I see it everywhere on the net these days.

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 19, 06 | 8:16 pm

BTW, these types of comments do somewhat depend on the context. That is, if somebody said they thought she was 'doable' in the context of a more general statement, I think that's okay. But if somebody just says they 'want to do her' or something like that, I will normally delete the comment. Also, I think saying what you want to do to somebody is more offensive than simply saying they are 'doable' in an abstract sense. A moderator's decisions can often be close judgement calls, and not everyone will always agree with them.

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 19, 06 | 8:23 pm

Actually, perhaps we should add 'crude' to the disclamier as well. Although it is similar to rude and vulgar, it is a little 'lower level', but still unacceptable IMHO. It's also probably the closest word to describing arf's comment (and a lot of what CLM wrote as well). Hence, I would probably rewrite the disclaimer as follows:

Asian Sirens is not responsible for comments visitors leave on this site, but will remove all spam, non-English, hateful, rude, crude, vulgar, discriminatory and inappropriate comments as soon as possible.

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 19, 06 | 8:31 pm

Oh yeah, so Jane March does have some Asian blood! I think I can feel a post coming on - any volunteers, or is it a job for the Doc? ;-)

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 19, 06 | 8:35 pm

It would probably help out if the moderators gave some examples of "rude", "crude" and "inappropiate". The others aren't are subjective.

I would assume that sexual comments would be more accepted in when the topic is about porn or sex, but inappropiate in topics dealing with models, actresses or non-porn related celebs.

Posted by: kaine on Dec 19, 06 | 8:42 pm

Actually, maybe we can replace 'non-relevant' with 'off-topic', which is more accurate and meaningful. Then the disclaimer would read:

Asian Sirens is not responsible for comments visitors leave on this site, but will remove all spam, off-topic, non-English, hateful, rude, crude, vulgar, discriminatory and inappropriate comments as soon as possible.

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 19, 06 | 8:44 pm

To answer kaine's question, as I said, giving examples is difficult, as it depends on the context (he has already given one example of that). As another example, I don't think it would be appropriate for everyone to come here and say Sook-Yin Lee isn't pretty enough, because she isn't a model. It is appropriate for models to be judged on their looks (as that's their job), but I don't think that's the case for serious actors and performers.

BTW, we shouldn't really be discussing editorial policy in this thread - I will be announcing a new system next week whereby these types of discussions will be given their own threads, so the posts about models/performers can be focused on the women themselves.

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 19, 06 | 8:48 pm

Doc -- I was just going to say that!

Are we really that geeky that instead of discussing actual penetrative Asian sex on the silver screen (and other groinal delights) we blather on about semantics and terminology!?! Yikes! Save us from ourselves!

Also, what you say about it being inappropriate (or non-appropriate ;) ) for "serious actors and performers" to be judged on their looks -- BAH! That's EXACTLY what does Hollywood does!!! Your look/image will make or break you unless you've got a dumptruck load of talent to carry you.

In my books, Sook-Yin's value just went up a notch with the 'real sex' role.

Posted by: Krazy4Kobe on Dec 19, 06 | 9:35 pm

Though I love the videos that ogpro posted (BTW, I needed to download a codec from http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/ to play them), some of you might want to see the uncensored trailer for Shortbus: http://www.ifilm.com/video/2768166 .

Posted by: QueensGirlsRock on Dec 20, 06 | 1:10 am

hey doc...i love jane march..dude she is super hot in a naughty way...especially neat that she was boinking a chinese man...a rich chinese man. that movie broke several barriers imo. first the lead male character is a strong masculine asian that actually stood up to the thugish, uneducated frenchies and nailed their little sis then go off and married a chinese woman according to his family's will. as an asian man, it is refreshing to see a strong leading asian lead....that dude had a booty on him also...wow did i sound gay there? :)
doc i hope you can find some pix of jane. also i hope you are lax about what we say here...we go from CLM, which was very offensive to some and now we cant even say we want to do somebody...i thought it was a compliment...i wish some chick would say they want to do me...:) wishful thinking eh? relax guys..you all are becoming rebublicans:)

Posted by: LawBoy on Dec 20, 06 | 2:40 am

Og..good job dude..keep it up...dont worry about flames if you keep this up:))

Posted by: LawBoy on Dec 20, 06 | 2:40 am

Check her Wikipedia entry for links to interviews about the movie. She says she wore a female condom so the guy wouldn't have to (it would have looked weird, they reasoned, for a married man to wear a condom while doing his wife).

I thought all day about the real sex issue. What I came up with is that I don't understand WHY it has to be real sex. What's the point? If you're making a movie, which is pretend, to illustrate some theme or point you want to make, then why go all the way like that? Unless, of course, your aim is to push an agenda (like sticking it to "puritanical America"). I mean, we're all adults--we can do what we like. But I just don't see the necessity.

On the other hand, of course, it gets me really hot.

Posted by: Curtis G. on Dec 20, 06 | 2:53 am

Don't worry LawBoy - I won't be any more strict than I have been, I just wanted to clarify our policies further. Once again, you can say she's 'doable' or whatever in the context of a more general statement, but to just do a post saying 'I'd do her' or whatever - and nothing else - is not the kind of comment we want to see, as such comments have no value to our readers.

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 20, 06 | 8:01 am

Oh yeah LawBoy - maybe Jane can be the subject of your first post?

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 20, 06 | 8:04 am

Will there be a requirement to stay on topic, Dr. Lee? Just curious.

Posted by: Curtis G. on Dec 20, 06 | 7:58 pm

To a point, yes. Once the discussion post is up, any further comments related to that discussion but posted in the model/performer's thread will be deleted. I will make this clear when I do the post.

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 20, 06 | 8:03 pm

Good self-awareness, LawBoy. :-D

Whoah, I missed that! You learn something new about our readers every day. ;-)

Posted by: Dr. Lee on Dec 20, 06 | 8:48 pm

hey daz and doc...i clarified myself....:)

love to get jane march on here but have to find some time...that is why i appreciate all posters here...:)

Posted by: LawBoy on Dec 20, 06 | 9:51 pm

I kind of like her looks especially her nice body and breasts. It's nice to see some real penetration in a mainstream film. I hope it was handled tastefully and within the context of the film. That would make it interesting in ways that porn can never be...jane march=hot especially in The Lover.

Good one.
Trivia from 9 songs, interesting:

Margot Stilley never wanted to be credited in the film because of the un-simulated, explicit sex scenes. She asked the director to refer to her in interviews as "Lisa", the name of her character in the film.

Kieran O'Brien and Margo Stilley did not communicate with each other between filming so that their off-screen relationship would not affect the one they had on screen.
