Miss Universe 2010

I had no idea that the Miss Universe pageant was being televised on Monday night here in the states. Usually, I don’t find out about it until the very last minute and end up missing most of the telecast. This year, I was able to watch a good amount of the pageant and check out the Asian contestants to write this article.

In Honor of Felicia Tang

"Admired for her talent, beauty and professionalism by all who worked with her, she will be deeply missed. She tried to make everyone around her smile."
- Adam Yurman
Immediately after her passing, the founder of PacificUSA asked if he could make a guest post in honor of Felicia Tang. Adam was Felicia's first photographer for her very first photoshoot and helped her get onto the covers of both Playboy and Penthouse. News of her death hit Adam hard, and he asked if he could dedicate a post to her beauty and spirit. Below is the transcript from an interview between the two, as well as several of Adam's favorite photos.

RIP Felicia Tang

Today has been a sad day for model news. In the comments thread of the Annie Chui post below, we learned that she passed away a few years ago in a car accident. Now we learn that Felicia Tang, one of the most popular online models of all time, was killed today by her boyfriend in their home. The world is now a less beautiful place than it was yesterday.

The New Trophy Wives: Asian Women

Verbatim from marieclaire.com:
Rupert Murdoch has one. So do financiers Vivi Nevo and Bruce Wasserstein. Why are the West's most powerful men coupling up with younger Asian women?
Call it the Woody Allen Effect. When the venerable director scandalously left Mia Farrow for her adopted daughter, South Korean-born Soon-Yi Previn — 35 years his junior — he may as well have sent out a press release: Asian-girl fantasy trumps that of Hollywood royalty! Not two years after they tied the knot, media baron Rupert Murdoch walked down the aisle with fresh-faced Wendi Deng — 17 days after finalizing his divorce from his second wife. Then, CBS head Leslie Moonves wed TV news anchor Julie Chen; Oscar winner Nicolas Cage married half-his-age third wife Alice Kim; billionaire George Soros coupled up with violinist Jennifer Chun; and producer Brian Grazer courted concert pianist Chau-Giang Thi Nguyen. Add the nuptials of investment magnate Bruce Wasserstein to fourth wife Angela Chao and the pending vows between venture capitalist Vivi Nevo and Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang, and we've got a curious cultural ripple. Miss Universe 2009

On Sunday night, I caught the tail end of the 2009 Miss Universe pageant. Usually I would know about the pageant ahead of time so that I could check out the Asian contestants, however each year the pageant is becoming less news-worthy and is why I did not know it was on until 2 hours into the program. By the time I started watching, the top 10 were selected with none of the 10 finalists being Asian. So I wondered if any of the Asian contestants should have made it to the top 10. Continue reading to find out.

Cause of Ai Iijima's Death Still Unknown

In case you haven't already heard, famous Japanese porn actress turned successful author and TV show host Ai IIjima was found dead on Christmas eve last year. Interestingly, despite being so famous, her body wasn't discovered until a week after she actually died, so it was so badly decomposed that an autopsy wasn't able to reveal her cause of death (her family had her buried immediately after the autopsy on Boxing Day). A scan of news sites reveals her cause of death is still unknown, although there is rampant speculation, including accidental poisoning, murder, suicide and complications arising from her AIDS. Apparently she has had a lot of failed business ventures recently which may have sent her broke, although friends insist she was in good spirits at the time of her death.

Korean Celebs' Tragic Ends

As some of you may already know, early this month, top Korean actress Choi Jin-sil (above) comitted suicide by hanging herself at her home in Seoul. She was 39. It was reported that she had suffered from depression since her 2002 seperation, and messy divorce two years later, from her pro baseball player husband and was upset by recent rumors (she claimed were false) that she had loaned a large sum of money to an actor friend and was pressuring him to pay it back, which was a reasom he commited suicide in early September. I suppose the alcohol she had to drink that evening also helped with her decision to take her own life.
Although Jin-shil's death shocked many, it wasn't the first time a high-profile female Korean entertainer has comitted suicide in recent years. More...

Why can't viewers see more of the Olympic cheerleaders?

Verbatim from Yahoo!sports:
One of the most popular sports at the 2004 Games did not give medals out to its participants. Admiring Olympic cheerleaders became a favorite pastime for many who attended the Athens Games, and the cheerleaders' popularity led the Beijing Olympic Committee to put together their own cheerleading squads (photo gallery here).
