Pacific USA

Pacific USA, a project that was started in 1994 by musician and photographer Adam Yurman (The Image Department), featured Sung Hi Lee extensively in the period 1995-1997.

Adam Yurman about this early period: "We were first made aware of Sung Hi via my good friend, David Chan, Playboy's oldest and most well known photographer. He did some test Polaroid's of her and sent a few to us. We called Sung Hi and expressed interest in having her out here in LA for a shoot while she was going to college. I personally took her Polaroid's and photos to an ad agency looking for a Korean model. It was for a (national ad campaign) modeling assignment here in LA which was for Miller Beer. She was flown out by the ad agency and booked for the Miller job based on the photo submissions I presented. She earned a very good size chunk of money and used it to make the move to LA. Soon after we shot her for our 1996 Pacific USA Calendar and featured her on the cover."

The style of Adam Yurman's photography is soft, sensual and moody. For the more commercial side of Yurman's work a steady stream of Sports Wear catalogs keeps the imaging and design side of his business booked year round.

After establishing a worldwide reputation for capturing the best of Asian American beauty on film, an unusual assignment request came in from Penthouse Magazine, Asia. Although Playboy Magazine had been an influence on Yurman at an early age, (in more ways than one) the offer to shoot for Penthouse (i.e. Sandra Kim series) was attractive because of the freedom that was offered to do what ever he wanted. So he began shooting in the classic and tasteful style he was comfortable with but for the other guys.

In 1997, East Meets West Calendars offered Sung Hi Lee to produce her own personal calendar in exchange for her agreeing not to appear in any other calendars including the Pacific USA calendars. According to Adam Yurman, East Meets West offered other models bonuses not to appear in the Pacific USA calendars as well. Adam Yurman about Sung Hi Lee’s move to East Meets West calendars: "We welcome healthy competition. Sung Hi made her choice and we support her decision. We wish her and all the models we work with the most success they can get. We still book Sung Hi for the occasional fashion catalog shooting (i.e. August 1997 American Pitbull Clothing Catalog) which is not in conflict with her exclusive calendar agreement."

In September 1997 Adam Yurman started Pacific USA Gallery, a pay site on internet that revealed a collection of their most popular models. It was around December 1997 that the web site was open for subscribers. Adam Yurman about the fact that Sung Hi Lee was not in the Gallery: "Sung Hi will be in my upcoming Pacific USA calendar and various images of her in non nude layouts will appear in both Pacific USA and the Pacific USA Gallery. She will not be in the gallery this month but all the work there is shot by me and I will be posting a personal recounting of the work we have done together as well as offering photo sets of her and others for sale." In March 1998 the webmistress of the gallery, Tina, left Pacific USA because she wanted to do a project that was all her own and reflected own her beliefs and interests. In June 1998 she will open her own web site Asian Image that is completely separate from Pacific USA.

Adam Yurman about the future of Pacific USA: "Pacific USA will release the 1999 Pacific USA Calendar in June and it will contain one not yet seen Sung Hi image. There will be an all new Pacific USA Gallery online in June as well. We will also be releasing information and images from the Sandra Kim series that has been bootlegged so heavily in newsgroups and web sites by Bluebird and others that we decided it was best to do this ourselves and the right way. Although we are more open minded about the Internet then some other big name publications, we do not approve of scanmasters signing their names to our photos. Actually this is quite offensive. I wish Bluebird would read this."

Pacific USA (with photographer Adam Yurman) featured Sung Hi Lee extensively in the 1996 Pacific USA Calendar (Cover, February, July, October), Asian Penthouse (Sandra Kim serie), the 1997 Pacific USA Calendar (March), the video Behind the Scenes, and on the CD-ROM Screen Teazers.
